Se educ\u00f3 en el famoso colegio de Eton. Despu\u00e9s de vivir\u00a0un tiempo en Corfu con su t\u00edo, y en Portugal durante un breve periodo de tiempo como soldado, finalmente se estableci\u00f3 en Escocia. All\u00ed vivi\u00f3 una vida de placeres, siendo amante de la caza y las apuestas.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"es-ES\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Se convirti\u00f3<\/strong> como consecuencia\u00a0de un comentario que le hizo en 1839 la duquesa de Gordon, una piadosa arist\u00f3crata escocesa, una semilla que tard\u00f3 quince a\u00f1os en dar fruto. En 1954 comenz\u00f3 una actividad vigorosa como predicador laico, y se hizo evidente que ten\u00eda un <strong>llamado de Dios a proclamar el evangelio<\/strong>. Pronto se hizo muy popular como predicador en muchas iglesias de Escocia, y en 1859 fue reconocido oficialmente como evangelista por la denominaci\u00f3n Free Church of Scotland. Ese mismo a\u00f1o, viaj\u00f3 a Irlanda y fue <strong>muy usado por Dios en el avivamiento<\/strong> que se extendi\u00f3 por la isla.
