Despu\u00e9s de estudiar en Glasgow y Edimburgo, se orden\u00f3 <strong>ministro de la Iglesia de Escocia<\/strong> en Roslin en 1827 y recibi\u00f3 la parroquia de North Leith en 1828, donde obtuvo gran fama de <strong>predicador ferviente y de gran elocuencia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>En 1829 se cas\u00f3 con Elizabeth, la hija de John Cochrane, un comerciante de Glasgow. Tuvieron un hijo y una hija antes de la prematura muerte de su esposa en 1832. En 1836 se cas\u00f3 con Mary, hija de John Morison, con quien tuvo una hija. En 1840, Buchanan fue llamado a ministrar la iglesia de St. Giles, en Edimburgo, pero <strong>se uni\u00f3 a la Iglesia Libre de Escocia<\/strong> tras la divisi\u00f3n de la Iglesia de Escocia en 1843, y ministr\u00f3 en la Iglesia Libre de St. Stephens hasta 1845.
